White Lotus, ink and colors on paper, framed under glass. Signature by the artist: “Painted by the Old Man Yuan at the Lake of Five Kiosks (Wutinghu) [in São Paulo]“. Two seals of the artist: “Zhang Yuan from the Shu District” (Shu jun Zhang Yuan), “Sanqian Daqian”.
From an old private collection in northern Germany, prior to 1983 according to the owners received as a gift of gratitude for a personal service to Zhang Daqian - Very minor traces of age, good condition
Zhang Daqian was from Neijiang in Sichuan province (old name Shu). He studied Chinese painting in Japan and in Shanghai where he was active until the war. In 1949 he left China and went to São Paulo in Brazil where from 1954 on he built a famous garden in Chinese style where he lived until 1971. Here he did many paintings of the lotuses in the lake which he named the ‘Lake of Five Kiosks’. The splash ink technique combined with green and blue color is characteristic of his new style at that time
